                                    24 JUN 2008

Dear Supporters of the Alameda Firefighters,

On behalf of the members and Executive Board of the Alameda Firefighters Association, I would like to extend my most heartfelt thanks for the support many of you exhibited on behalf of public safety through the arduous budget workshops and City Council meetings over the past several weeks. This coalition of citizens, CERT Team members and leaders, business owners, retired firefighters and family members was an amazing example of teamwork. Your phone calls, e-mails, editorials, and presence at the workshops and Council meeting was absolutely instrumental in preserving the level of fire and emergency service to the community of Alameda.
We are by no means out of the woods yet. The $571,000.00 that was restored to the Fire Department budget will help to keep the 5 Engines, 2 Ladder Trucks and 3 Ambulances in service 24 hours a day, but only until additional revenues can be appropriated to bring the Fire Department closer to maintaining an appropriate level of readiness to respond to emergencies and deal with natural disasters. We hope that you will continue to monitor the situation, and be able to continue supporting our endeavors to provide adequate fire and emergency service to the City.
In appreciation of your time and effort, the Alameda Firefighters will be organizing a Bar-B-Que for everyone who turned out to support the maintenance of our minimum level of service, and will get that invitation out as soon as we can secure the details. Please look for an e-mail in the next few weeks with the details of the event.
Again, thank you for your support and together, we will be able to ensure the continued emergency preparedness of our community into the future.

Sincerely,

Domenick Weaver, President
Alameda Firefighters Local 689

Welcome to our website.

The Alameda Firefighters’ Association has been a member of the International Association of Firefighters (I.A.F.F. Local 689) since 1941. Local 689 is recognized as a “100% Union Fire House” by the I.A.F.F. All of our eligible Alameda Fire Department employees (Firefighters, Apparatus Operators and Captains) are union members.

Our organization’s values constantly focus on the safety of our members and the citizens that we serve. This requires a collaborative relationship with the city to ensure adequate staffing and a well-trained and equipped department.

Our island city is unique with its geography as compared to other cities in the San Francisco Bay Area. While the city is 10.8 square miles on land, it is surrounded by another 12.2 square miles of water, making Alameda 23.0 square miles with a population of about 77,000. Three draw bridges into Oakland, one to Bay Farm Island and two one-way tunnels leading into Oakland’s Chinatown provide the only vehicle access to the island.

We currently deploy 27 of our members daily to the city’s five fire stations. Working 24-hour shifts, our members staff five A.L.S. engines, two trucks and three A.L.S. ambulances, responding to 5,950 calls in 2007. In addition, our members also provide cross-staffing to a water-rescue boat, fire boat, and technical rescue vehicle.

Giving back to our community and those in need is important to our Association. Through monthly union dues and fundraising events, the firefighters are able to raise money and return it to over fifteen local charities in Alameda. Locally, we sponsor local youth sports organizations, assist with Toys for Tots, host an annual pumpkin giveaway for Alameda residents in October and provide for local families in need during the Christmas holidays each year. We also forward all proceeds from our annual pancake breakfast to the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation and members get out to “fill the boot” for the MDA.

Please feel free to contact any of our Executive Board members with questions about Local 689 or our webmaster regarding this website.

Thanks to the 60 Alameda Firefighter's Association members who recently walked the streets of Alameda on behalf of Measure H.  These members donated over 150 hours of their off-duty time to spread the word and handout information in support of Measure H.  In addition, the Alameda Firefighter's Association donated $2,500 from it's P.A.C. fund.
